The Prince opens with an introduction that connects political writing to the changing fortunes of Florence. Its account follows a life shaped by three distinct civic periods: the city’s prominence under Lorenzo de’ Medici, the republican government that followed the family’s downfall, and the restoration of Medici power. These transitions provide a concrete setting for approaching a work concerned with rulers and political authority. The opening biography describes public service that included diplomatic missions to European courts, followed by imprisonment, exile, and a return to San Casciano. The introduction links the loss of office in 1512 with a subsequent period of literary activity and growing influence. It also records that death came shortly after another expulsion of the Medici, without a return to official employment. A section on youth presents Florence through two contrasting currents: Savonarola’s austere religious fervour and Lorenzo’s splendid courtly influence. Savonarola appears as an example of an unarmed prophet whose career ended badly, while the dedication to Lorenzo’s grandson connects the book to the Medici family. A quoted passage about young Florentines adds social texture through descriptions of fashionable dress, witty conversation, gaming, and extravagant spending. Together, these opening pages establish the historical and personal circumstances surrounding the work and offer an entry into its political setting.
