Night falls over the Seeonee hills, and a family of wolves prepares for the hours when the jungle belongs to its hunters. An opening song celebrates talon, tooth, and claw while placing their freedom beneath the authority of the Jungle Law. Inside a moonlit cave, Father Wolf wakes beside Mother Wolf and their four cubs, establishing a domestic scene within a world of predators. Their evening is interrupted by Tabaqui, a jackal whose flattering manners conceal a delight in making others uncomfortable. He accepts a discarded bone, praises the cubs despite the superstition surrounding such compliments, and announces news that threatens the wolves’ hunting grounds. Shere Khan, a tiger living near the Waingunga River, intends to hunt among their hills. Father Wolf objects because the move violates the requirement to give warning and may drive away the prey his family needs. Mother Wolf connects the danger to the tiger’s habit of killing cattle: angry villagers may search the forest and disturb animals who had no part in his attacks. The opening of “Mowgli’s Brothers” presents the jungle as a society governed by customs, obligations, reputations, and competing needs. Through lively dialogue and sharply differentiated animal characters, it introduces questions of territory, responsibility, family protection, and the consequences one creature’s behavior can bring upon an entire community.
